PKTAAB, USM, continues to reinforce its commitment to academic excellence and quality assurance through the organization of a two-day workshop entitled “Workshop on the Development and Refinement of MQA/MMC-02 Documentation for the Master of Medicine (Transfusion Medicine) Programme”, held from 22 to 23 October 2026 at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Batu Ferringhi, Penang.
The workshop brought together 12 academic staff members, lead by Dr. Siti Salmah Noordin (Head of Transfusion Medicine program) from the Department of Clinical Medicine and Academic Affairs Secretariat. The programme provided a collaborative platform for academic staff to review, refine and strengthen the accreditation documentation for the Master of Medicine (Transfusion Medicine) programme in accordance with the requirements and expectations of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
The workshop was organised in recognition of the importance of robust academic documentation in maintaining the quality, integrity and sustainability of postgraduate medical education. In Malaysia, the MQA provides a comprehensive quality assurance framework through various reference documents, including the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF), the Code of Practice for Programme Accreditation (COPPA), the Code of Practice for Institutional Audit (COPIA), Guidelines to Good Practices (GGP) and relevant Programme Standards. These frameworks collectively guide higher education providers in developing, implementing, evaluating and continuously improving their academic programmes.
Throughout the two-day programme, participants engaged in intensive discussions, collaborative documentation and critical reviews of the various components of the MQA/MMC-02 submission. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring consistency and alignment between programme objectives, learning outcomes, curriculum structure, teaching and learning strategies, assessment methods, clinical training, academic staffing, educational resources and programme governance.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of demonstrating not only compliance with accreditation standards but also the actual implementation and effectiveness of the programme's academic and clinical training activities. This approach is essential to ensuring that the documentation accurately reflects the programme's educational philosophy, operational practices and commitment to continuous quality improvement.
For the Master of Medicine (Transfusion Medicine) programme, the exercise represents an important opportunity to ensure that postgraduate specialist training remains responsive to the evolving demands of modern healthcare and advances in transfusion medicine. As a specialised and rapidly developing discipline, transfusion medicine requires comprehensive training that integrates clinical expertise, advanced laboratory diagnostics, immunohaematology, transfusion safety, patient blood management, therapeutic apheresis and emerging transfusion technologies.
Beyond fulfilling accreditation requirements, the workshop reinforced the collective responsibility of academic staff and institutional administrators in sustaining a culture of academic excellence. It also provided an opportunity to strengthen teamwork, harmonize academic expectations and establish a shared understanding of the quality standards required for postgraduate medical specialist training.
The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment to further refine the programme documentation and strengthen the academic quality assurance processes in preparation for the relevant accreditation and review exercises. Through this initiative, USM reaffirms its dedication to delivering high-quality postgraduate medical education, strengthening institutional academic governance and producing competent, ethical and future-ready medical specialists. The continued development of the Master of Medicine (Transfusion Medicine) programme reflects USM's commitment to advancing the field of transfusion medicine and contributing towards safer, more effective and sustainable healthcare services in Malaysia and beyond.
