MSc Medical Research representing Malaysia at the EU-ASEAN YOUTH SUMMIT 2022

Mr. Thanes Gunasekaran, a semester one student from the Master of Science Medical Research programme from Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, successfully represented Malaysia in EU-ASEAN Youth Summit 2022, held on 13 December 2022 in Residence Palace, Brussels and online.

The First EU-ASEAN Youth Summit, a youth-led activity, is organized together with the EU-ASEAN Young Leaders Forum, the Young Indo-Pacific Forum, and the Youth Sounding Board as an EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit side event. Young leaders from the EU and ASEAN were there to discuss policy recommendations to be presented at the EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit on 14 December where EU and ASEAN leaders meet. Over 200 people attended the celebration of EU and ASEAN youth at the first-ever EU-ASEAN Youth Summit.

Mr. Thanes was involved in a discussion on the topic COVID-19 mitigation and recovery an EU ASEAN Health partnership. The European and ASEAN youth were represented by three youth groups who presented their work leading up to the Summit.

During the event, Commissioner Urpilainen and her Youth Advisor Qyira Yusri gave invigorating and engaging opening remarks alongside the ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi, Cambodian State Secretary Kim Sethany. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of young people as “the beating heart of our partnership”.
