USM STEM WEEK 2024, which took place on the 9th and 10th of November (Saturday to Sunday) at Dewan Utama Pelajar, Universiti Sains Malaysia, was an immersive journey into the fascinating world of genetics with the theme—'The Genetic Odyssey: Exploring Our Biological Heritage’. The event featured a variety of interactive booths and activities designed to engage participants of all ages and backgrounds in the wonders of genetic science. Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI) participated at the main event as one of the STEM exhibitors.
One of the main attractions of the AMDI sections was the Hands-On Genetics: Learning Cells, Genes, and DNA booth (Dr. Siti Razila and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatanah). Here, attendees delved into the fundamentals of cellular biology and genetics through comprehensive notes, detailed models, and interactive activities. Participants tested their knowledge with quizzes, assembled double-stranded DNA molecules, labelled cell parts, created DIY chromosome models, and engaged in Q&A sessions with experts. This hands-on approach aimed to make complex genetic concepts accessible and engaging.
The Genetic Guidepost: Your Traits and Beyond booth (Dr. Siti Nurfatimah and Dr. Shafinah) explored how our genetic makeup shapes our unique traits and predispositions. Visitors played the role of inheritance detectives by tracing genetic disorders using a pegboard to display the patterns of inheritance for single-gene and polygenic disorders. Another highlight was the unique trait tracker activity, where students created bracelets with beads representing their inherited traits! Additionally, printed crosswords and word searches provided a fun and educational challenge, while informative posters and clay models made learning about DNA strands and karyotypes both visual and interactive.

At the Chromosome Abnormality booth (Dr. Mohammad Syamsul and Dr. Muhammad Amir), attendees learned about the different types of chromosome abnormalities and their impact on health through detailed displays and hands-on models. This booth provided crucial insights into the genetic factors that can lead to various medical conditions, enhancing understanding and awareness of these complex issues.

The From Mutations to Monsters: Meet the Cancer Cells booth (Dr. Nurulisa and Dr. Norfarazieda) offered an in-depth look at how genetic mutations can lead to cancer. Engaging activities included the cell creativity with dough station, where participants could create cell models using dough, providing a tactile and creative way to understand immune cell structure, illustrated the dynamic interaction between immune cells and cancer cells. Biomarker discovery challenge encouraged participants to engage in activities aimed at identifying genetic biomarkers. The targeted therapy dart game allowed participants to learn about targeted cancer therapies through a fun and interactive dart game.
