MAHIDOL UNIVERSITY, November 15 2023 -
From the 13th to the 17th of November, the lectures and students from the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia (AMDI,USM), under the leadership of Dr. Ng Siew Kit, were honored to embark on a visit to Mahidol University for the program titled "One Health Approach to Zoonotic RNA Viruses in Pandemic Preparation."

Mahidol University, a distinguished academic institution in Thailand, is renowned for its expansive array of academic programs and the vibrant tapestry of student life that it cultivates. While comprehensive details concerning every student activity at Mahidol University may not be exhaustively outlined here, the following encapsulates the student activities gleaned from the students at Mahidol University and those personally experienced during our trip.

According to communication with students at Mahidol University, a diverse spectrum of student activities is designed to cater to a myriad of interests and passions at their university. These activities assume a pivotal role in augmenting the holistic student experience, affording avenues for personal development, skill enhancement, and social integration. Spanning academic and cultural clubs, sports associations, volunteer initiatives, and leadership development programs, Mahidol University actively fosters a dynamic milieu that encourages students to transcend the confines of their academic pursuits. Noteworthy examples include the Science Club, Mahidol Day of Service, and various sports associations.

Furthermore, as part of our cultural exchange activity on the 15th of November, the lectures from both Mahidol University and Universiti Sains Malaysia engaged in the symbolic act of releasing krathongs into a river using iPads. This ceremonial observance not only commemorated the success of the program but also served as a collective expression conveying well-wishes to all participants.

Releasing the Krathong into the River with iPad

Loy Krathong, a widely celebrated festival in Thailand, occurs on the full moon night of the twelfth month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, typically in November. The festival involves creating and launching "krathongs," small floats symbolizing the release of worries. Participants release these floats into the water, making wishes for good fortune and happiness. Traditional performances, including Thai dance and music, showcase the rich Thai heritage during Loy Krathong celebrations. Actually, we also received the Krathong from Mahidol University. Based on environmental awareness and convenience in expressing traditional activities, people are encouraged to use eco-friendly materials or electronic alternatives for krathongs. That's why lectures released krathongs on iPad in our cultural exchange activity.

There are various student activities at Mahidaol University. Among these, releasing Krathongs is not just a student activity but a traditional culture in Thailand; it symbolizes the deep reverence of the Thai people for nature and their expressions of gratitude, offering a captivating experience for both local and international participants.
