USM AND QUEEN MARY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON (QMUL) STRENGTHEN ACADEMIC COLLABORATION THROUGH THE ONLINE MSc. IN CANCER BIOLOGY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AMDI

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) welcomed Prof. Anthony Warren, Dean for Education at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), during a visit aimed at strengthening academic partnerships between the two institutions. The faculty is linked to one of the oldest medical colleges in the world, and QMUL is ranked among the top 20 globally for research citations in Medicine and Dentistry.
The meeting, held at the Chancellery Building in USM, was chaired by Prof. Dato’ Gs. Dr. Narimah Samat, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) at USM. It served as a platform to review existing collaborations and explore new opportunities in medical postgraduate programmes.

A notable highlight was the online Master of Science in Cancer Biology, a collaborative programme offered by QMUL in partnership with USM’s Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI). This unique programme integrates QMUL’s academic excellence with AMDI’s and QMUL’s clinical and research expertise, catering specifically to USM graduates. The programme is also part of QMUL’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry initiative in digital education, aiming to make higher education in medicine more accessible and inclusive. Prof Warren's visit underscores the commitment of both institutions to addressing the growing demand for expertise in cancer biology and oncology sciences, particularly in Malaysia.

In her welcoming remarks, Prof. Dato’ Narimah highlighted the historical significance and academic standing of QMUL while expressing enthusiasm for the anticipated outcomes of this collaboration. Discussions also included future prospects, such as developing joint programmes and leveraging the capabilities of the USM Bertam Medical Centre, now recognised for its advancements in radiation oncology and its recent upgrade to a Clinical Specialist & Cancer Research Hospital. The visit featured key representatives from USM, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bakiah Shaharuddin, Director of AMDI, and AMDI’s Deputy Directors and Heads of Departments, Prof. Lee Keat Teong, Director of the International Mobility and Collaboration Centre (IMCC), Their presence reflected a shared commitment to enhancing academic programmes and training a new generation of cancer researchers and oncology specialists to meet regional needs. Prof. Warren's presence further solidified the partnership, laying the foundation for expanding collaborative initiatives between USM and QMUL. Speaking on behalf of AMDI, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bakiah Shaharuddin affirmed, “AMDI is fully committed to ensuring the success of this programme, as it aligns with our mission to advance education, research, and training in oncology for the betterment of healthcare in the region.”
